1566 Persian Manuscript, The Bustan of Sa'di

Sheikh Sa'di of Shiraz was one of the most celebrated Persian poets and philosophers and has been called the greatest moral teacher of his time. His two best poems are the Bustan, or Flower Garden and the Gulistan or Rose Garden. This leaf is from a ms done by Meer Ali al-Kateb and is dated A.H. 974 or 1566. The script is the Nasta'liq style and represents the highest development of the calligrapher's art. Gold sarlowh decoration present. The fine quality paper, from linen rags, was sized according to one of the many secret processes and polished by rubbing with a glass ball or shell.. F6- 21

Late 18th Century "Sanskrit" Leaf

Purchased from The FolioPhiles collection, once a store in Santa Fe, NM. The dealer stated that it was possibly late 18th century (1775) sanscrit. I found a very similar-looking item that the seller thought was written in "punjabi." The label on that leaf was "19th century, from the "Bhagvad gita." I tend to think this is more likely. Framed.. ?- 0

1799 Ottoman Leaf, Book of Muslim Prayers

Dated, on the last page, AH 1211 or AD 1799. Notable for the quality of illumination. Chapter headings are flower arabesques. Obtained in Marrakech originally, but the script is the Ottoman Naskhi rather than Maghribi, so it is almost certainly imported to Morocco from the Middle East. Framed. Purchased from a tiny antique store in London.. Closet- 0

1852 Ferdowsi, Book of the Shahnameh

The manuscript of this book of the Shahnameh was scribed by Baba Khalil Allah in Kashmir and is dated 1852/3. It is written in Persian in a very fine hand in the nasta'liq script. The miniatures are integral to the book but the artist is unknown. The book was in poor condition but many pages and most of the miniatures could be rescued and were sold individually. The Shadmaneh is the Persian "Book of Kings" and was written in verse form (60000 verses) by Ferdowsi for the Sultan Mahmad of Ghazna in the 9th century. It covers the history of the Persian Kings from mythical times to the fall of the Sasanid empire in the mid 7th century. It is one of the most popular works in the Persian world. The stories are a bit gory, hence the miniatures tend to be as well.. F1- 43

15th Century Leaf from Book of Islamic Devotions

From an Arabic manuscript of the 15th century. Moghrebi calligraphy, a picturesque script that has been employed for centuries in Algeria, Morocco and throughout North Africa generally, with the exception of Egypt. Moghrebi is nearly always decorated, or at least rubricated, and possesses a barbaric beauty that gives it a unique position among the many styles of Arabic writing. It is less popular with scholars than with artists, because it is difficult to decipher. The paper used in this ms. is apparently of European make. Although the Moor introduced paper into Europe, the art so flourished there that the trade was soon reversed, with European papers finding their way into Moslem lands. Arabic is a Semetic language, derived from the Aramean alphabet, and its early evolution, as a philologist puts it, "into a curious 'short-hand', with its many ambiguous abbreviations of the historic letters, is one of the most remarkable transformations known in the history of callifraphy." And, no less remarkable, one may add, was the swift spread of this once insignificant dialect, unaided by the printing press, to a commanding position among the great languages of the world.. Technically, this doesn't belong here, but I love these and they have no place else to go yet. I bought one and the other (the text leaf) was given to me free by the seller. I haven't seen anything like them before or since. The size is also extraordinary: around 17" x 6".. F1- 6
