1925 Knight's award from Italian King, This beautiful document is an award of the Order of the Crown by Italian King Victorio Emanuel III in 1925. The document measures about 10" x 14" and is uniformly toned with age. A great display item. It was award to Cartland Bishop and his rank was Commander. It is rare to come across one of these actual award documents. It is this diploma that actually awards knighthood, not the medal. This document is signed by the chancellor of the order and the director of the division and has the Grand Master's seal impressed into the document. I imageine the Grand Master was King Vittorio Emanuele who's name is signed in print. - F2 #46.

7 LeBreton documents, 17th century, purchased 2/2002 (listed by Laurent as #'s 6, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18)

This group was purchased from Laurent in Canada around February of 2002 for about $310 - B8

Special Purchase "C"

25 LeBreton Documents, 17th century, purchased 8/2002.

9 smaller documents from 1615/21 for a total of 15 pages, 3 paper document about 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" for a total of 146 pages from 1627/38. One very large document is 100 pages, 12 parchment documents about 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" for a total of 104 pages from 1627/38.

Laurent believed that some of the parchment documents are copies and list again and again the property of the deceased (Robert LeBreton). The very lengthy paper document repeats six times the same text at one poitn because the announcement of the sale had to be made after mass, three times in three weeks in two different churches.

This group was purchased from Laurent in Canada around August of 2002 for about $850.00. - B9

Special Purchase "D"

1650 - 1699 Lord of St. Buc court case, 17th century, purchased 8/2002 (14 docs bound together).
1650 to 1699 (with most from around 1684/5) Court Case (Lord of St. Buc.) About 14 17th century documents, mostly parchments, that are part of a legal dispute between a provincial French Lord and a Parisian merchant and banker, with the seizure of property of the Lord, who loses the case. The documents are all intricately bound together with the same twine that binds each of the individual documents.

The bound “package” of documents is about 8 ½” x 11 ½” and has 13 parchment documents for a total of 102 pages, of which 3 are blank, 9 are difficult to read because of the dark brown parchment and 8 have holes. The one document on paper is 10 pages long and of smaller format (7 ½” x 10”). I paid approx. $300 from Laurent in Canada around August of 2002.

Laurent did not mention it, but there were a number of post-it notes with information on them, sprinkled throughout the document. They are as follows:

“Inventory of the property that is being seized from the Lord of St. Buc.”
“Property sold to Mr. LeChut(?) by candle auction for 4580 livres on March 1685”
“Sebastian Collin (?), high bidder, takes possession of the house and dependencies of St Buc, June 22, 1650” - B9

Special Purchase "E"

17th - 18th century documents (19), purchased 2/2003.
About 19 documents from Normandy that are middle 17th to late 18th century copies or transcripts from registries and older documents (1452-). A good mixture of admissions, exploit, contracts concerning inheritances, land sales, recognition of revenue, assignation to make admission and pay taxes, clarification of property ownership and receipt of revenue.

The one 16 page document is a full copy of the 1554 court decision in favor of Robert Varin, Lord of Fourches, that discharges him of the obligation to pay tax on his right of franc-fief.

The remaining documents are as follows: one page (4), two pages (3), three pages (9) and four pages (2). This only counts the manuscript pages.

This group was purchased from Laurent in Canada around February of 2003 for about $325.00. - B9

Special Purchase "F"

7 "lost" LeBreton Documents, 17th Century, repurchased 3/2003.

I was just a tad late when I originally started buying up the LeBreton documents years ago. Prior to my arrival on the bidding scene and even for a good year after, I recalled a specific buyer snapping a few up. Years later, I noticed this individual beginning to sell his collection and I emailed him asking if he had any LeBreton documents to sell. He came up with 7 of them (some of which apply directly to the case and some that are about relatives):

1608, June 10: paper, 4 pages

This group was purchased from "Durandus" who purchased them from Laurent in Canada. I repurchased them around March of 2003 for about $150.00.

1525 Carta Executoria page (letter patent). From Carta Executoria, a Pedimento del Consejo de la Villa de Ceveco de la Torre..., written at Valladolid, Spain in 1525. Folio ms on vellum. Spanish language text in formal Rotunda script in brown ink with initial strokes in contrasting colors, primarily yellow, the whole encased within red borders and line guides extending into the wide blank margins. The Carta is a form of Letters Patent peculiar to Spain. This ms, dated 15 Feb. 1525, is the judgement of a land dispute, in which the town Council of Cevico de la Torre finds that certain lands, in Monte Derrasedo belong to the town and not the claimants Don Rodrigo Manual and his mother Dona Juana de la Cerda. Although this leaf dates to a period decades after the introduction of printing, it is entirely handwritten. It was in Spain that the tradition of ms. illumination persisted the longest in Europe, with hte famous large format Antiphonals still being hand copied as late as the first half of the 18th century.- F2 #1

The rules regarding the livestock, the owners, ,the sale of wood, the distribution of the rents, ...are some of the main points included in this manuscript. The disputes on the unit of longitude to mesure the lands are also one of the main points. Seems that there were lot of troubles regarding the cord used to fix this measure and that is keep in the city council. The orders of the Council is to forge an iron bar of the same length that will be inserted in the wall of the town hall. This manuscript has 24 pages, 20 of them fully written, in folio size,

1600, 1603 Foundation of Census,
Ancient spanish indenture written in the year 1600, containing all the details regarding the foundation of a CENSUS between a widow and a couple, by which is stipulated the obligations of both parts. This manuscript of 12 written pages in folioi size, has the last two one dated 1603, being annex to the first ten pages, dated 1600, and that seems to contains the cancelation of the previous CENSUS. So it contains two signatures at the end of each main text, being written by the same notary. This manuscript has an interesting calligraphy being a transition between the complicated XVI calligraphy and the XVII c. just starting. - b6
1618 Power of Attorney (and Deed).

Also includes the deed regarding some terrains sold by the mother (who was widow), and a second text, in the same document, written in 1618, one year after the initial deed in which it is closed some process of the transaction. The text is written in seven pages, in folio size. Paper is obviously yellowish and stained, but fully readable. Last leaf with some creasing where folded, but only affecting a couple of words. The one from 1619 contains a dowry that a lady gave to her daughter before the marriage. It has five written pages and a beautiful notary signature and drawing at the end. Then a two pages manuscript containing some notes regarding the facts regarding the dead of a lady, family of the precedants, and the disputes on her heritage. Finally a stamped revenue manuscript dated 1662 containing a three pages transfer of lands. The two stamped revenue contained in this document is an early and well preserved example of this legal procedure to tax the public and legal documents, that was instaured 25 years ago. There is a small paper written in the XVIII making a summary on the content of this three documents, that must have some link in common to be tied together. - b3

f2 # 12-13 1850's original art and accompanying letters for illustrating a book of Spanish cities and provinces. 12 is an orig. drawing and printed cut (plus letter) of the coat of arms of Habana, Cuba and has the motto "always very loyal." It is likely that the project was not completed as Spain entered a long period of internal political trouble from 1854 to 1868. #13 is for Pontevestra and includes a letter and ink and paint drawing.

f2 #6 has 3 items. 1st is 9.5x4" ms leaf in sanskrit. Most likely one of the Hindu sacred texts. Paper, probably 19th c.

Also 1590 leaf from copy of Book of Common Prayer in English with woodcuts. sometimes referred to as Queen Eliz. Prayer Book. Book of Christian prayers, collected out of the ancient writers and best learned of our time, worthy to be read with an earnest mind of all Christians, in these dangerous and troublesome daies, that God for Christes sake will yet still be merciful unto us. By Richard Day. Publisher: London, Printed by Richard Yardley, 1590. REFF STC 6431. Each page of text within historated borders: these depict the Life of Christ, allegorized virtues and vices, the five senses, apocolypse, charity, the dance of death and the last judgement. Elaborate woodcut borders surround the text on every page, a design harking back to the French book of hours on the one hand and forward to william Blake's ill. books on the other. The borders show emblematic, classical and biblical scenes and a dance of death series loosely based on Holbein.

Finally, original leaf from Mancellinus, Antonius, Opera (the Words), printed by Johannes de Vingle at Lyons, France in 1500. Quarto. Black letter latin text in single column formatm occasional side-notes or variant column layout. Large Black Letter page headings. An interesting work by the now-forgotten Medieval grammaticist and student of Classicism. A fine example of Lyons printing and type casting and a handsome leaf from the final year of the Incubabula period. The Colophon dates the completion of this work at 1 July 1500. Ref: Hain 10577. Not in BMC or Goff.

F2 #5 contains 4 leaves (3 in 1 series). Standalone leaf is from Pandectarum, seu Digestorum Juris Civilis... (A compilation, or digest, of civil law) printed at Paris, France, by Francois Renault in 1539. An early Parisian printing of the complex code of current and Ancient law, with extensive commentary and interpretation. The body of the work appears in double column Black Letter Latin text, with commentary surrounding the work in smaller type. This handsome edition is distinguished by the use of red ink in the titles and Uncial capital letters, an attractive specimen of the new two-color printing technology then rapidly replacing the hand painted titles and initial letters of the earliest printed volumes.

F2 4 has a beautiful little leaf with red and blue rubrication. I don't recall any more at this time.

Folder #3?

1 1525 Paris vellum

2 Leaf taken from "Decretales dni pape Gregorii noni accurata diligentia nuper emendate..." Or, Decrees of Pope Gregory IX printed in Paris 1516. Attractive format with the decree in two columns in the middle of the leaf surrounded by annotations in Latin. Black gothic style typeset, with some text accented in red. Fine condition, measures aprox. 7x9". Very beautiful Paris edition of the "Decretales," one of the most important and principle parts of the corpus of the canonical right, and the first pontifical legislative code. This work of Pope Gegoire IX (1227-1241), the "Decretales" were promulgated in 1234 and were printed for the first time at Mainz in 1473. This was a major reference work of the period as the "Decretales" were printed in many editions in the 16th century, at an important time in religious history when progress of the Reform rejected not only Catholicism, but other parts related with the political and economic capacity of the church.

3 Two leaves from a renaissance era printing of "The Sphere of Scrobosco" (De Spharea) by Johannes de Scrobosco. Printed and annotated at Viteberg by Philippus Melanthon. Dated 1538. Note: there is an interesting hand drawn reproduction of one of the woodcuts in the margin of one.

4-5 1510 Catalogus Sanctorum Leaf by Petrus Natilibus, Venice (there are more somewhere)

6 1603 Orlando Furiosa Leaf by Ariosto, Venice

7 1582 leaf from "The first book of the history of the Discoverie and conquest of the East Indies, enterprised by the Portugals, in their dangerous Navigations, in the time of King ?, Second of that name. Which history containeth much variety of matter, very profitable for all Navigators and not unpleasant to the readers. Set forth in the portugal language, by ? and now translated into English by N. L Gentleman. Imprinted in London by Thomas East. 1582."

8 1514 leaf from Flavius Josephus, Praeclara Opera (The most eminent works of Flavius Josephus), printed by Jean Barbier for Regnault and Petit at Paris, France in 1514. Folio size. Roman letter type in single column format with side notes. A high quality early Parisian printing of all the works of the great 1st century Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, who chronicles the history of his people from the earliest biblical times to the catastrophic First Revolt. This edition is distinguished by the use of nicely historiated initial letters, four lines high or more. Page headings are done in handsome Black Letter type. Colophon dates completion on 30 March 1514. Reference Adams J-354.

9 Greek

10-11 Original leaf taken from a very early printed book of 1474. Text leaf from "In Librum de homine martii galeotti opus" by Georgius Merula about 1474. Printed in Venice by John of Cologne and Johannes Manthen REF: BMC V230, H 11097, GOFF M504, Measures 7.5" x 5.25". The only thing I could really find about the author was that he lived between 1430-94. He wrote a number of books during that time period, one of which had to do with the history of the Visconti family, the predominant family in Milan from the 13th to early 15th century. While Merula never completed the work, he also wrote a botanical glossary.

12 Biblia Sacra...

13 1519 leaf from Dio Cassius,...caesarum vitae (Cassius' Lives of the Roman Emperors), printed by Aldus Manutius at Venice, Italy in 1519. Octavo size, single column Latin text set in "Aldine Chancery" (Italic) script. A fine early printing of the great historian's work of the Roman Emperors who ruled from the late 1st century through the strife-torn 2nd century of the Christian era, when the great power of the ancuent world began its descent into dissolution. The Aldine Press was one of the greatest of all printing establishments, setting standards of excellence that would endure the centuries. The typeface used in this work was first introduced by Aldus as the world's first "italic" set type.

14 "Sermones de laudibus Sanctorum by Robertus Caracciolus" printed in Reutlingen by Michael Greyff. 1495 (see folder for more info)
